|MIC has developed a Detailed Master Plan (DMP) to guide the development of the Community Area of MIC. This DMP is currently being used in the expansion and development of the town. The development, driven by rapid industrial growth, includes full infrastructure and a diversified, cohesive community. The plan has a twenty-five year horizon. Many individual projects have already been completed based on the plan, with many more either under construction or in planning.
The new Medical Centre opened in 2004, replacing the former facility. The centre provides primary healthcare to the residents of Mesaieed. Studies for future expansion are already being carried out as the population in Mesaieed is increasing.
Gabbro Import Facilities
As a national initiative, all aggregate for construction in Qatar has been changed from local limestone to imported Gabbro. The infrastructure for the storage area and additional berths in the MIC Port has recently been completed. Further development of a storage area and additional berths is in progress.
Qatar Real Estate Investment Company is responsible to develop and operate Worker Accommodation in MIC. Two phases of the project are complete, the third phase to open mid 2006. The full project will accommodate approximately 9,000 workers from the various local industries and contractors working in Mesaieed. Development of additional facilities will follow the increasing demand.
Al Afjah Heritage Village and Desert Park
Located on the western outskirts of MIC, adjacent to the existing greenbelt, the village was the first development in Mesaieed. It was occupied up until the late 1970ís. MIC will restore the buildings using traditional construction methods and provide attractive landscaping and lighting.
The village will serve as the focal point within the planned Desert Park, nearly 2.5 square kilometres of natural terrain with facilities for hiking, biking, barbecuing, and camping. Other plans include water, themed activities and live animals.
Centralized Office Complex
The Centralized Office Complex in the town centre will provide space for MICís offices as well as QP Engineering, QP Refinery and QP Operations. The project, which is currently under construction, will minimize the number of non-operational personnel in the industrial area, while making the offices more accessible to the public.
Situated in the town centre, adjacent to the new shopping complex, construction of the park is expected to be complete in 2005. The park has both passive and active recreation areas for adults and children, including gardens, amphitheatre, cafeteria, miniature golf and shaded tables and seating.
To enable the other planned work to proceed; MIC has initiated the upgrading and expansion of the infrastructure in Mesaieed. This includes the town center and residential areas, as well as the Light Industrial and Support Services Areas. These projects, which include roads and utilities, are scheduled for phased completion by 2008.
Housing Project Phase One
MIC has planned for the increased demand for housing in Mesaieed. The development of the residential areas will include infrastructure, housing, mosques, schools, landscaping and other public facilities. The first phase of the project, with over 1200 housing units, is scheduled for completion in 2007 and will meet the current needs of QP and Joint Venture Industry employees.
